Oh, those conservatives they just say the darnedest things. I really would like to see what would happen if Mr. Mike went to North Korea and said some of the things that he has said about Obama. I think that we would never see Mr Huckabee again, unless he managed to escape from one of those prison camps in the northern part of the country…. From Think Progress: Huckabee: There’s More Freedom In North Korea Than In The U.S. Former Arkansas governor, and current Fox News contributor, Mike Huckabee told a conservative gathering this weekend that he is “beginning to think that there’s more freedom in North Korea sometimes than in the United States.” Huckabee was speaking on Saturday at the New Hampshire Freedom Summit, a confab of conservatives — such right-wing luminaries as Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Rand Paul (R-KY) — in the first primary state of 2016. Huckabee ran through a panoply of “threats and affronts to our freedom today,” riling his audience up about the ongoing stand-off between the federal government and a cattle rancher in Nevada, along with the supposed Benghazi scandal and Brandeis University’s revocation of Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s offer for an honorary degree. So way back about a month ago I wrote a morning rant titled Let Them Starve? – Why the Hate? Included in the post were three articles two of which pondered the question – Why is there so much hate in America today?? I ended the post with …..
I for one was appalled at the racist Tweets after the crowning of the New Miss America, to me the crowing showed what is right with America! That Americans can accept people of all Nationalities and religions and out of the experiences of many, comes a strong and vibrant nation, “conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal” Gay, Straight, Black, White, male female it doesn’t matter!!! Remember this line from the Pledge of Allegiance “and to the republic for which it stands; one Nation indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” – Let’s hope!! (emphasis added)
Many of you may have followed the incredible story of Malala Yousafzai because it’s been all over the news. And while I’ve heard and read about the story I was as wowed as Jon Stewart was when I watched his recent interview with Malala Yousafzai the other day. In case you don’t know the story Malala is the remarkable young Pakistani woman (I use woman instead of teenager because she is composed well beyond her 16 years)who was shot and nearly killed by Taliban fighters for advocating that all girls should have the right to go to school!! Her journey from her Swat Valley home is inspiring!. Oh no, it’s time for a geography lesson. Where is the Swat Valley. From Wikipedia:
US government indebtedness has been the norm in the financial history of the nation. The carriage of debt in Western Europe and North America by governments has been normal for the past 200 years, so the US situation is not unique. The US has been in debt every year except for 1835.
So this afternoon The Democratic Party posted a video of a portion of the President’s February 15th speech at the Hyde Park Academy on the south side of Chicago. In the video clip the President Obama reflects on what we must do to give every child a chance in life—stronger communities, stronger families, and doing everything we can to keep our kids safe from harm.
The President stated: “This is not just a gun issue,” “It’s also an issue of the kinds of communities that we’re building, and for that we all share responsibility as citizens to fix it. We all share a responsibility to move this country closer to our founding vision, that no matter who you were or where you come from, here in America, you can decide your own destiny.”
When I read this headline I was pissed! (If you’ll be offended by a gun control rant exit now and if you do continue answer the question in the song!) NRA Dismisses ‘Connecticut Effect,’ Suggests Grief Over Newtown Tragedy Will Be Short-Lived
The National Rifle Association will wait until the “Connecticut effect” has subsided to resume its push to weaken the nation’s gun laws, according to a top NRA lobbyist speaking at the NRA’s Wisconsin State Convention this weekend. Though the NRA had been tight-lipped about how the Newtown tragedy would affect their efforts, lobbyist Bob Welch, who represents the Wisconsin NRA group, was anything but during their yearly meeting.
Ok so I oppose war – I opposed the wars in Vietnam and Iraq , along with the current war in Afghanistan, now that doesn’t mean I oppose the men and women who are fighting! Quite the opposite I am proud of them. You see my opposition means I don’t want to see them getting killed, wounded or coming home traumatized, for all the wrong reasons! So I was upset by the Republican omission of Afghanistan at their convention and even more upset when I read the reason that Romney gave for the omission in his speech! Romney On Omitting U.S. Troops From RNC Speech: ‘You Talk About Things You Think Are Important’. Hum, I bet the families of those troops, fathers, mothers, siblings, parents and grandparents all think it’s IMPORTANT to recognize their efforts and to tell us what your plans are for the future! But then again there are lots of things that Romney won’t show or tell us like – his tax returns!
Ok so, I am not the best judge of character. My wife always says that I always expect the best in people, I always expect that they would say or do the same thing that I would. Years ago, when our old neighbors’ marriage broke up, the husband Billy was left in the other half or our double, our circuit breakers kept tripping. We knew that the utilities in his half of the double had been turned off, yet, surprising he still had power at times. My wife suggested that Billy, an electrician by trade, may have been stealing electricity from us! My response was that Billy would never do that to us, he liked us! Anyway one day, I was leaving the house and on opening the front door I heard the TV on in Billy’s house. I quickly went down to the basement flipped some circuit breakers went back upstairs and “Well I’ll Be!” Billy’s TV was off! It turned out that he had tapped into our electric both in the basement and the attic!! I relay this incident just to say that it takes a lot for me to say that I really can’t stand someone! While that’s on a personal level, it is still hard for me to accept on a political level overall dislike for someone, but these Republicans make it easy! Two of them that I can’t abide are the Speaker of the House John Boehner and Majority Leader Eric Cantor with Mr Cantor topping the list!! Other folks scoring high include Mitch McConnell and the candidates for President and Vice-President. Now today I read this post On Labor Day, GOP Leadership Celebrates Management at Think Progress and here’s what Mr Cantor tweeted:
They say you learn something everyday and this attempt on the life of President Kennedy was certainly new to me!
Mental Floss: Dan Lewis:In 1960 a Retired Postal Worker Almost Killed JFK
Thinking about JFK took me immediately to memories of my 5th grade classroom and sitting, listening to the radio, waiting to see if the Soviet ships heading for Cuba carrying missiles would turn around or if we were headed toward nuclear annihilation! Obviously we know how it turned out, but the question of the day is – If the Country faced a similar crisis today – who would you rather have as President Obama or Romney? For me it’s not even close the cool, calm collected, Obama wins hands down!
So we all know that things have changed in the US Senate in the last 34 years. Just how much it’s changed was driven home to me tonight as I read about Jimmy Carter’s first venture into Middle East politics in Ira Shapiro’s The Last Great Senate. In February of 1978, the Carter Administration announced that it would seek congressional authorization to sell fighter planes to Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia. The plan was to sell sixty F-15s, to Saudi Arabia, seventy-five F-16s to Israel and fifty F-5Es planes (considerably less advanced than the F-16s) to Egypt. In 1974 Congress had enacted the Nelson-Bingham Amendment giving Congress the authority to block any arms by passing a concurrent resolution of disapproval within thirty days of formal notification.
