New Folk: Rayland Baxter – feathers & fishhooks!

Ok so after I write that the next 40 days are going to dedicated to rediscovering rock, I have the ipod on shuffle and recently added tracks, up pops “Dreamin'” by Rayland Baxter from his latest release feathers and fishhooks, and t was time to forget rock for a while and listen to the this album! What a great album from a young songwriter. From his press kit bio.

My story is… I am born n raised in Nashville, TN. I am 26. I write songs. I stand by tradition. I enjoy the taste of cold coffee. I drive a ’91 Jetta that I bought for $500. Its made of thicker metal than your car, I guarantee. I grew up watching my father perform with Bob Dylan, Steve Earle and Ryan Adams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bucky_Baxter), which in turn are some of my influences. J.J. Cale, Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Townes Van Zandt are a few. I like Dr. Dog alot as well. They are great. I have spent a lifetime of listening…to everything, and now I am trying to do it myself. I hope my journey as a musician and writer is very long..

From a review of the album by Nancy Dunham at No Depression.com:

…. Baxter, who has become something of a constant on tours by Grace Potter & the Nocturnals and The Civil Wars, is a traditional Americana artist in the best sense of the word. His deeply personal songs, often featuring fierce pedal steel courtesy of his multi-instrumentalist father Bucky Baxter, puts one in mind of the dusty country songs recorded by Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and even Steve Earle.

I’ll add that he reminds me a little of Jimmy LaFave. But for me the album is terrific so check it out! Here’s the first track on the album “The Mtn. Song”
