So I did write yesterday that it’s been a while since I really listened to any bluegrass, but still, the one band that is on the chart that I never heard of was the Sleepy Man Banjo Band and their latest album The Farthest Horizon. Evidently, I’m the only one whose not heard of this band. The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno all knew about them. As did David Letterman and enough people for 11 million Youtube views of their bedroom practive videos! So what’s so special about these boys – they’re BOYS!
The band is composed of the Mizzone brothers, ten year old Jonny on banjo and his brothers Robbie (13) on fiddle, and Tommy (15) on guitar and they are damn good!! Good enough that they made appearances on all the above mentioned TV shows and in August 2011 the boys were named official Martin Guitar Ambassadors, made their Grand Ole Opry début, and performed with banjo legend J.D. Crowe at a bluegrass festival near their home in western rural New Jersey! Oh and they also appeared at the Ryman Auditorium where they kicked off a stirring tribute to the late Earl Scruggs with actor Steve Martin! Back in October the album was No 3 on the Billboard Bluegrass Charts! Here’s what Pete Wernick says about the band!
“In my 65 years I’ve never seen a banjo player with this combination of youth and talent.
And the group is excellent… They play together so well! This group will be making
waves for many years!” Pete Wernick (“Dr. Banjo”)
So I don’t think I need to say anymore, just go get the album and enjoy!
