So the fiddler that I listened to this morning was Casey Driessen and his new album Oog.(which means eye in Dutch). While I did not recognize Driessen’s name right away I have probably heard his fiddling before because he has played with a lot of people including Béla Fleck, The Sparrow Quartet, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, Steve Earle, Abagail Washburn, and Frank Vignola. For this album he got together Darrell Scott guitars, Victor Krauss, bass and Matt Chamberlain on drums and under the the watchful eye of producer Jason Lehning they created an interesting album. I’ll have to listen to it a few more times to appreciate it but I know there was some good fiddling and interesting musical arrangements on it! Some of the tunes that stood out including “Conversation with Death”, “Hunting for Quail Eggs” and “Ashland Breakdown” I watched a video he did on the making of the album and one of the cool things he did was Matt Chamberlain did some fiddlestick playing where he drummed on two fiddles! Anyway I do have to listen again too pick up all the little things! But overall it was a great and interesting listen!
After listening to the Hot Club of Detroit this morning I got to thinking about Django Reinhardt this afternoon so I qued up one of his albums on Rhapsody The First Guitar Master-The Best of Django Reinhardt this afternoon and gave it a listen. he only album I had of his was a old vinyl that didn’t sound too great, but what I listened to today sounded fine and I enjoyed his great playing!
So it was an interesting kinda jazzy day!
Here’s Casey performing the “Sugarfoot Rag”
