Life’s Soundtrack – Jimmy McCarty and Friends

The Washington Monthly: Steve Benen: It’s the demand, stupid

Way to go Mitt you got it right, but maybe it’s wrong in the eyes of your party!

So you think September’s been a good running month for me! I certainly do!

You know what’s nice? To be running comfortably enough that at certain parts of the run including the last mile you can say I’m going to pick it up now and it actually happens! According to the GPS on my watch which may be a little off

mile 1 – 1.08 – 9:57

2   1.05 – 9:55

3  1.09  – 9:42

4  1.04  – 9:19!!  Must be some improvement!!  It doesn’t hurt that it was a lot less humid tonight!!! Oh for fall weather!

The soundtrack of tonight’s run was  an album that sits at number 40 on the Roots Music Reports Blues Chart Jim McCarty and Friends – Live From Callahan’s. The album is a great collection of jams with McCarty and some of the best in the blues including Duke Robillard , Jason Ricci and The New Blood, John Nemeth. and Jimmy Thackery.  The album was recorded over a number of years at Callahan’s and you can read about the CD and the release party here.

While researching who is this Jim McCarty playing some great blues guitar on this album I went to Wikipedia and what did I find?  Jim McCarty has been around for a long time and  has performed with Mitch Ryder and The Detroit Wheels, the Buddy Miles Express, Cactus, the popular Detroit rock band The Rockets, the Detroit Blues Band, and more recently, Mystery Train. Wait What did I read…. The Buddy Miles Express. Wait I’ll be right back just going to the basement to look at my copy of Expressway to Your Skull… yup there it is right after Herbie Rich organ, tenor sax, Jim McCarty guitar! Hum guess I have to listen to Expressway to Your Skull!  Here’s what Ted Nugent (it’s hard to write this because I really don’t like Ted Nugent the person, the musician maybe)

In an August 2006 interview on VH1 Classic, Ted Nugent remarked “I’m the only guy in rock’n’roll that plays that hollow body jazz guitar and it’s because in 1960 I saw Jimmy McCarty creating those big fat full chords like I do on “Stranglehold”; I learned that from Jimmy McCarty. Remember the name Jimmy McCarty. He is as important as Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry and Les Paul…a god on guitar.” Guitar-maker Paul Reed Smith is among McCarty’s admirers.

So check out Jimmy’s blues album …… while I go listen to some Buddy Miles!

Here’s Jimmy McCarty and Jimmy Thackery at Callahan’s with a track from the album “School Days”
