Sunday’s Playlist – CCR to Phil Ochs!

So in the last few days I’ve been re-ripping some CDs that are on some lost planet hard drive somewhere! So this morning when I went to the store I put the iPod on shuffle and listen to a playlist that I haven’t heard in a while and some that are new to the iPod! Starting off was an instrumental from one of those artists that a. I haven’t listen to in a while and n. Didn’t listen to much after I picked up the album, from Tony Furtado’s album American Gypsy “Kentucky Strip Mine. The playlist included three songs from Jack William’s new album The High Road Home and they were three of my favorites “Road Dog Blues #1″, Pumphouse Blues” and No Longer Headed Nowhere”. I like Jack’s new album more every time I hear it!

Also on the playlist were four tracks from Creedence Clearwater Revival “Proud Mary”, “Who’ll Stop the Rain”, “Up Around the Bend” and “I Put a Spell on You”. Creedence was one of those bands that you always heard on the radio so I never bought their albums. I did buy Joh Fogerty’s solo stuff though Centerfield and Blue Moon Swamp I’ve listened to his new album The Blue Ridge Rangers Ride Againand I didn’t like it as much as I did the release before the Revivalwhich I thought was a great album!

John Prine’s “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody” turned up on the playlist as did Iris Dement and John’s song “(We’re not) The Jet Set” from In Spite of Ourselves always a fun song!

Two new tracks showed up “Dumb Luck” from Peter Cooper’s new album as did “Cross That Line” from the Ty Curtis Band.

Other tracks came from BR-549 always a pick me up band contributed two tracks “The Price of Love” and “Fool of the Century”. Allison Moorer, Chuck Brodsky “Restless Kid”. Chuck writes some great songs about baseball including a song about Doc Ellis’ no hitter that he pitched while he was on LSD and the song that appears on Last of the Old Time “Bonehead Merkle”

The playlist ended with an Eric Andersen cover of Phil Ochs a great version of Phil’s “When I’m Gone”. The track is on Eric’s album Memories of the Future and a track that I had forgotten about!! Thinking in terms of an article that Peter Cooper wrote for American Songwriter “Fifty Country Songs Every Songwriter Should Know” “When I’m Gone” certainly goes on a list of 50 Folksongs that every folk musician should know! Any others?? Phil’s “There But for Fortune”…Tom Paxton “Last Thing on My Mind”……

Here’ a very nice cover of the song from Facebook friend and No Depression’s Kim Ruehl
